In so many ways, China has quickly transformed itself from a place of stark poverty into a modern, urban, technologically savvy economic powerhouse. While China’s growth strategy of relying on unskilled labor has been effective for three decades, it is now experiencing a reversal in the unskilled wage, as companies inside the country have begun automating at an unprecedented rate and are searching for cheaper labors in other countries. To guarantee the long-term sustainable development of China, it is crucial to improve the level of education and social security of labor force. In this talk, professor Rozelle will carefully examine the related issue drawing on his research in China.

Rozelle's papers have been published in top academic journals, including Science, Nature, American Economic Review, and the Journal of Economic Literature. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Rozelle has received the Friendship Award in 2008, the highest award given to a non-Chinese by the Premier.
